Sidekick Digital Media

Back Story

Sidekick Digital Media is an agency based in California, USA. Over recent years, it has quickly established itself as one of the market leaders for pre-made PowerPoint and Excel templates. The company successfully infiltrated the student market and utilized a clever free trial lead magnet to entice new customers.

As the company continued to grow, it needed to expand its reach and increase its brand awareness. The goal was to identify topics that would provide helpful information for potential customers that would bring them onto the website and also help their two brands (Simple Slides and Simple Sheets) rank on the first page of Google for the first time in their history.

I was brought in to take charge of everything SEO, including sourcing keywords for other writers, creating engaging content to rank highly on Google, and managing other writers, designers, and YouTube actors on Asana.

What I Did

Sourced high-value, low-competition keywords

The first thing I did was create a bank of low-competition, high-value keywords on AHREFs. I made a list of over 200 opportunities for the brand to go after, separated them into a worksheet in Excel, and delegated the different keywords to other freelance writers.

This worksheet became our SEO bible, and no content was published on the site that didn’t utilize these opportunities.

I also stretched the search parameters past just PowerPoint and Excel and tapped into the popularity of Google Sheets and Slides.

Wrote engaging, helpful content for consumers that helped improve brand reputation

Once these keywords had been established, I worked alongside the other less experienced writers, creating engaging how-to guides for customers to increase the brand's reputation and bring more organic traffic to the site.

This step also included writing content as backlinks for other reputable websites and establishing potential partnerships based on their posting fees and domain rating. It was important not to just use any generic link farm for our backlinking, as we needed authentic links only.

Managed and oversaw other writers' and content creators' workloads in Asana

As content was getting created at a speedy rate, it was essential to utilize the task management tool Asana to keep all the moving parts in place. I oversaw the creation of articles and set up a process where these were uploaded into Asana with the necessary information for imagery and videos to be created.

Once created, I reviewed the content and pulled it together to publish it.

Published articles and provided detailed reporting on website performance

Finally, I was responsible for reviewing all artwork and accompanying YouTube videos for articles and collating them with the content created and published on the site.

This meant identifying catchy SEO titles, meta descriptions, image tags, blog tags, and reputable external and internal linking to gain as much SEO performance as possible.

I oversaw the creation and publishing of anywhere from 5-12 articles per week.

The Results

In summary, Sidekick Digital Media experienced a significant increase in traffic, and multiple articles I produced ranked on the 1st page of Google for the first time in the company's history. That included one article ranking #1 out of one billion search options.

  • Simple Slides went from 3.1k organic traffic to 14.6k

  • Simple Sheets went from 4.5k organic traffic to 18.8k

  • 17 articles ranked on the front page of Google, beating out much larger opposition, including Microsoft, in one instance. Before this, the company had zero articles on the first page.

  • One piece ranked as the top choice out of over one billion options.
